Why is it called a “Teddy” bear? The story begins with a hunt in 1902
In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt went on a bear hunt and refused to shoot a bear that had been cornered for him. A newspaper cartoon made the story famous. Roosevelt's nickname was "Teddy", and a New York shopkeeper began selling a stuffed bear as "Teddy's bear" — the start of what would become a major toy company.
At almost the same time in Germany, the Steiff company introduced a stuffed bear with movable arms and legs. Born separately in America and Germany, the two bears came to share one name — the teddy bear — and spread to children's rooms around the world.
