Plush care basics — what you can wash yourself, and what belongs with a pro

Most modern plush toys are polyester, and if the care label allows water washing you can hand-wash at home: press-wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent, towel off the moisture, reshape, and dry completely in a ventilated shaded spot. Give drying a few days — damp stuffing breeds mold and odor.

Some things should never go in water at home: natural materials such as leather, wool and mohair; toys with electronics or sound boxes; glued-on eyes and noses; antiques and keepsakes. Water causes shrinking, peeling and failures that cannot be undone.
